How to perform Special Machining: 90 Degree Milling

Article Summary

MillBox has the capability to leverage openings on Fixtures (C-Clamps) and specifically capabile of utilizing Special 90° milling capabilities in order to achieve superior facial surface details on dental prosthetics like interproximal detail, facial cutback surfaces and proper emergence on full arch cases / screw retained bridges.

There are some steps involved in the setup of this process.

Requirements for utilizing 90 Degree Milling

NOTE:
It is important to note that this special workflow applies to discs with or without collars, but the collar must be the same material. For example: If you are using a Zirconia disc with a PMMA / Plastic collar, it is not recommended to use this workflow. The cutting strategy is optimized for the material that is expected to be cut. Since the collar will be cut off during the Roughing stage, it is very important that the tool does not encounter materials that require different cutting parameters, otherwise this could result in a broken tool or damage to the milling machine.

In order to have a successful 90° these steps must be completed:

  1. The object must be positioned to have the facial offset facing the open area of the C-Clamp
  2. Open the offset to change the open angle extension and reduce offset area.
  3. Select the PAINT BRUSH and paint the emergence profile or areas that require more milling detail with the selection Tool
  4. Select the Special Machining 90° as a milling option.

1. Positioning Your Restoration

The Bridge or restoration must be positioned to have the facial side oriented toward the open area of the C-Clamp:

NOTE:

To maximize space in the disc, the object can be positioned with the offset outside of the machining area. The part cannot be positioned outside of the machinable area. It is recommended to keep the bridge within the machinable area to ensure that the part is completely milled out.


2. Opening the Offset

To allow clearance for the tool to access the restoration along the open-face on C-Clamp, we need to remove all of the material on this side of the disc (including the material collar). This can be useful to provide more access for Undercut Operations and / or 90 degree milling operations.

MANDATORY for 90 DEGREE MILLING:
Opening the offset is necessary to allow access for 90° milling operations

To extend the offset outside of the disc

  1. Select the restoration
    2. Select the Hammer / Wrench icon
    3. Select the Open Offset icon

Define the Cutting Boundaries and Angles

  1. You can move the green nodes to reduce the offset area.
  2. You can move the slider to to change the open angle extension.
  3. Select the checkmark to continue

NOTE
Do not overlap your opening of the offset with the fixture / clamp as this could result in collision warnings during nesting and calculation

3. Painting 90 Degree Surfaces

We've updated this portion of interface over the years and as of MillBox 2020 and later after selecting how the offset will be opened, you will be prompted with an option asking if you want to select / paint the areas for 90 degree milling.

NOTE
You have 2 options for milling surfaces along the open face of the C-Clamp:

1. Manual Painting of these surfaces - This LOCKS the Milling Zone Designation tool to be used only for 90 degree operations.
2. Automatic Milling of facial surfaces - This UNLOCKS the Milling Zone Designation tool to be used for additional machining operations such as 3+2 Undercuts or Anatomic / Interproximal details. You don't have to paint anything at this stage and will need to make sure that you select to mill "ALL" Facial Surfaces for the Special Machining 90 Degree Option. SEE: 


Selecting yes will automatically open the paint brush option for you to paint the emergence profile or areas that require more milling detail with the Selection Tool:

  1. Select the Paint Brush Tool
  2. Paint the facial surfaces of the part that you wish to finish in greater detail


Pre-2020 Versions of MillBox

(Older Versions will require selecting the TOOLS and then the Milling Zone Designation option)

Select the Milling Zone Designation and paint the emergence profile or areas that require more milling detail with the Selection Tool:

(This selection step is required for 90° milling unless you are running 2020 version or later of MillBox)

4. Selecting Milling Options

After the surface has been defined for the additional machining step, the proper selection during the Milling Options at the Toolpath Calculation stage is crucial:

You must select one of the Special Machining 90° options:

No Paint

  • SPECIAL MACHINING 90°- MILL ALL FACIAL SURFACES
    • This option will mill ALL facial surfaces visible along the open face of the C-Clamp.
    • This option is most suitable when the part fits well within the open face of the C-Clamp or fixtures with better clearances.

Paint Required

  • SPECIAL MACHINING 90°- MILL PAINTED FACIAL SURFACES
    • This option will only mill facial surfaces that have been painted along the open face of the C-Clamp.
    • This requires the user to have selected "YES" to the prompt to paint along the open face at the Opening Offset step and to have specifically painted the surfaces on their restoration.
    • This option is most suitable when the part is nested close to the edge of the fixture / clamp, allowing the user to specifically designate surfaces that eliminate tight clearance cuts.
      • If your machine is having accuracy issues, this option is best.
  • SPECIAL MACHINING 90°- 1ST REST MILL PAINTED FACIAL SURFACES (with 0.6mm)
    • This option will bring in a tool that is smaller (0.6mm) than the finishing tool (1mm) in order to further refine these surfaces.
    • This requires the user to have selected "YES" to the prompt to paint along the open face at the Opening Offset step and to have specifically painted the surfaces on their restoration.
  • SPECIAL MACHINING 90° - 2ND REST MILL PAINTED FACIAL SURFACES (with 0.3mm) 
    • This option will bring in a tool that is smaller (0.3mm) than the last tool (0.6mm) in order to further refine these surfaces.
    • This requires the user to have selected "YES" to the prompt to paint along the open face at the Opening Offset step and to have specifically painted the surfaces on their restoration.
